After a nearly three-year absence,
Southern Crappie Tournament Trail returned to Lake Oconee on November
20, 2010 for a one day event. The weather was really nice, and for the
first time ever, 13 new teams joined our trail during the same
tournament. A husband and wife team drove approximately 420 miles from
Virginia to Lake Oconee without pre-fishing, and fished well despite not
being able to practice… Great job Dennis and Dee!
Our first place team was a father
and son duo, Brian and Bret Davis of Leesville, SC. They had a 7 fish
total weight of 11.48 lbs and first big fish at 2.30 lbs. Team Davis
fished in four different places, ranging from 30 to 38 feet of water,
with fish in the 20 foot range. Their fish came on a variety of B.A.D.
baits tipped with minnows around timber in the river run.
Darren Carson of Gary, GA and Ricky
Layton of Macon, GA placed second, with a weight of 10.65 lbs. They
fished in 30 feet of water, 12 feet deep around stumps and used Sugar
Bug Jigs. They said that they fished from the dam to Lick Creek, and
used white chartreuse white jigs.
The third place prize went to
another father and son team, Robert Huff, Sr. and Robert Huff, Jr. of
Macon, GA, with 10.36 lbs pushing 24th oz Jiffy Jigs on the
bottom and plain hooks above. They fished in 20 feet of water, 8-10
feet deep in the morning, and later moved to 18-20 feet of water in the
afternoon on the main river channel around trees.
Steve and Brenda Branham, a husband
and wife team of Lugoff, SC was the top male/female team with 8.90 lbs.
They were awarded two Wally Marshall rods. John and Hank Hall were the
adult/youth winners with 5.25 lbs, and received trophies for their
effort.
The Southern Crappie Tournament
Trail proudly thanks all of our local and regional sponsors for their
support this year. The next tournament will be held at Fishing
Creek/Stumpy Pond on December 11, 2010. We look forward to seeing you
there!
