Fishing Creek / Stumpy Pond, S.C.- December 1, 2007

On December 1st, anglers got to experience first hand a good example of the fall “false spawning routine” that crappie will go through. Having had a warm fall and no rain, the water temperature remained in the 6o degree area. The last few weeks of cold night had a rapid fall of the temperature as the mid fifty range hit; this triggered all the fish to start moving up river to shallower water. Fishing Creek being a small lake had all the fish up river at one time creating a catch that you could only dream of. But as past experience has taught us, fish can only tolerate the pressure for so long as Saturday was a prime example. A beautiful calm-wind 60 degree day proved to be heartbreaking for some as the bite really slowed.

The single pole jig fishing team of Gary Phillips and George Cooper from Prosperity, S.C. got top honors with a 15.69 lb. basket of hammers. The duo was fishing tight against the bank on any king of cover that was there. The fish were hiding on the bottom under the cover. This gave them a reward of over $1200 in cash and prizes.

The second place Father and Son team of Brian and Brett Davis from Leesville, S.C. were tight lining minnows at the Hwy 9 Bridge to a close 15.59 lbs. of specs. This earned the two over $500 for their efforts.

Taking third place was the Clayton, N.C. team of Freddie Sinclair and Eddie Clifton. The Lake Jordan winners had found fish that moved up in the creeks for their false spawn run. They surprised 14.51 lbs. of craps as they were pulled from their hiding place. To help with their gas price the two were rewarded close to $300 for the cause. Eddie and Freddie were tight lining minnows around various covers in Cane creek.

Taking home a check for $300 for the big fish was the Stanly, N.C. team of Rick Warlick and Curt Bumgarner. The big fish weighed in at 2.34 lbs.
