Wylie, S.C./N.C. -December 8, 2006
As
we enter the holidays with our 5th event of the year, most anglers know what
the weather can bring. High winds on Friday and a super cold front that
dropped the temperature down to a comfortable 16 degrees on tournament
morning…and with that drop, the fish also dropped in the water column.
This
is just the AWD Baits team of Milton Dowey and Joe Cantey from Lugoff, S.C.
needed to bring home their first victory in a while. Joe and Milton were
fishing a rocks throw from Ebenezer landing to boat 13.32 lbs. of Craps. The
duo out-fished 51 teams to bring home close to $1400 in cash and awards. Joe
and Milton were tight lining AWD crappie delights fishing 25 to 30 feet deep
catching bottom fish.
Having a strong performance for second place was the local team of Keith
Sanders and H. L. Gibson from nearby Gastonia, N.C. The two were tight
lining humps and brush in the river to net 13.14 lbs. that helped them get a
check for $566.
Never failing to get a check on Lake Wylie is the well known dock shooting
team of Randy Pope and Jerry Pruitt. Randy and Jerry were down the river
pulling out slabs like taking candy from a baby. Netting 12.92 lbs. helped
them get the third place check worth $297.
Don't be fooled by the weights. These anglers just excelled from their
experience as great fishermen. This lake has gotten tough to catch crappie
on. Out of 51 teams, only 7 could manage ten fish for the event. As
anglers, we must remember to only keep what we need and release the rest. As
a Southern Crappie member, I can say that every fish but one was released
back into the lake. Good job members, this lake really needs it.
