As for the sixty teams that gathered on Lake
Wateree for the December event, some of us found out what nice, cool, rainy,
muddy water can do for those big slabs that we were catching. This was the
case on the upper end from Singleton Creek to the Cedar Creek dam. The Craps
almost completely shut down. And for those that pre-fished on Friday during
the cold, windy conditions, some anticipated this would happen and opted for
some smaller bags. It paid off as most of the good catches came from the
Colonel Creek area that is not known to carry big loads in the winter
months. Oh well! That’s fishin.
Fishing real close to the mud line was the
all but famous “Wateree Mauler” (aka Nick Babin). Nick was in his
usual spot in the river between June Creek and Singleton. Using AWD WOW
grubs, Nick pulled up 15.25
lbs. in the middle of 8 or 9 boats as all they could do was watch in
amazement.
Taking second was the Rock Hill boys Jim
Hood and Sandy Hazeldon. Jim and Sandy had a stringer of craps that totaled
14.01 lbs.
Finishing third was the Advance, NC and
Winston Salem, NC team of Tom Sprouse and Steve Gentry. One of the most
consistent tight-lining teams around, the two netted 13.28pds.
This once again puts the notion of trolling
on the back burner. But don't think for a moment that I won't mention it
again. For the year it stands trolling…none, everything else…4.
