Fishing Creek / Stumpy Pond, SC. -Sept. 24, 2005

What ever happened to the good ole days when you could long line troll in open water and catch all kinds of crappie? Well I’ll tell you what happened; them dadblamed tight liners are teasing craps with a little deeper bait each year until finally they have convinced them that they are supposed to live right smack dab on the bottom of the lake. Now with no other option I have no choice but to get out my B&M 14-footers and join the crowd. Needless to say not every troller can tight line as once again I took a whooping. Let this be a warning to every tight liner out there, one of these days crappie will realize that the scenery is much better close to the surface.

Until then teams like Tom Sprouse and Steve Gentry will dominate the crappie waters just like they did at fishing creek. The duo were bumping the bottom midway back in Bear Creek to reel in 11.12 lbs. of specs.  They were using black and pink crappie snacks tipped with minnows.

Off to another hot start for this year, the bridesmaids were once again the team of Mark Leatherman and Jimmy Wright. Not counting but I think this is the 12th time the two have finished second.  I know a blind hog can find an acorn but i am beginning to wonder if these two can bring it home. Just kidding about that, it is almost every tournament that these two have been the team to beat. I got close enough to find one little secret that I must try. A guy must hang his foot in the water and kick it around on occasion. It must work as the two come away with 10.69 lbs. including a duo of two-pounders. One of those getting them the second big fish money. Mark and Jim were tight lining hair jigs and straight minnows on the bottom in 18 to 20 ft of water at the mouth of Bear Creek.

Taking third away from me was the team of Dennis Morgan and Doug Dawley. Always hard to beat on the Catawba River chain, the two came out of the lake with 10.15 lbs. plus a 2.13 lb. big fish. Dennis and Doug were, believe it or not, also tight lining minnows on jig heads on the bottom in 18ft of water at the mouth of bear creek.
