Lake Wylie 2005

From seventy-degree weather for nearly three weeks to all of the sudden rain 20 to 30 mph winds during the tournament, that can really make for some real tough fishing conditions.  On Saturday morning with a wind chill of 20 degrees. Sixty-five teams from as far as Georgia took to the waters with anticipation of finding those big slabs that Wylie is known for. The weather was so bad on Friday that hardly anyone could fish. So it was mostly a shot in the dark for a lot of teams. Even in the worst conditions most teams hung in there to get a chance at over $5000 in prize money.

Taking top honors were the Chapin and Little Mountain team of Allen Farr and Mike Frick. Being familiar with Lake Wylie where they were in third place the first day and as big al put it they choked the second day, this wasn't the case Saturday as the two came to the scales with 16.47 lbs. of slabs including a 2.49 lb. big fish to take home over $1800 in cash an prizes. The duo was fishing the Catawba Creek area using Charlie Brewer Sliders and AWD crappie snacks.

Coming close again but only to be bridesmaids for the second time this season, was the Gastonia team of Dan Reid and Keith Sanders. The two were fishing some secret brush right in front of the Allen steam plant in the secondary channel about 63 feet above the spillway and 14ft off the bank. And they told me not to tell where they were fishing. (Okay) they were using some homemade what Dan calls a filicktale jig. Well it works as they netted 16.08pds for a second place finish and check for $619.

Rounding out the top three was the team of Tom Sprouse of Advance, NC and Steve Gentry of Winston Salem. Tom and Steve were slow trolling AWD grubs in Crowder Creek to bring in 14.77 lbs. with nine fish. Six of the nine were two pounds each.
